What is fast fashion and how does it affect our planet?
Fast fashion is a phenomenon that has gained popularity over the years due to low prices and quick access to new trends. But behind this "fashion convenience" lies a huge cost – not only environmental but also social. At RESTYLER, we believe that style doesn't have to harm. That's why today we're explaining what fast fashion really is and why it's worth choosing a different path.
What is fast fashion?
Fast fashion is a clothing production model based on mass, cheap, and rapid production of apparel that quickly reaches stores and disappears just as fast. Collections change every few weeks, and clothes are designed to attract attention, but not necessarily to last for years.
Why is fast fashion a problem?
1. Extreme resource consumption
Producing one T-shirt can require up to 2700 liters of water. In addition, there's the consumption of energy, pesticides (e.g., in cotton cultivation), and chemical dyes, which often end up directly in rivers.
2. CO2 emissions and carbon footprint
The fashion industry accounts for about 10% of global CO2 emissions. The global transport of clothing and the production of synthetics (e.g., polyester) are enormous climate burdens.
3. Mountains of waste
Many clothes are worn only a few times and then end up in landfills. In Europe, we throw away an average of 11 kg of textiles per person annually. Fast fashion is disposable fashion – but the planet is not disposable.
4. Unethical production
Low prices often mean low wages, poor working conditions, and the exploitation of people, especially women and children in developing countries. Consumption has its price – it's just not always visible on the tag.
What is the alternative?
Instead of buying new items every season, it's worth investing in second-hand clothes, recycling, and quality. Outfits can be creative, thoughtful, and conscious – without harming the environment or other people.
RESTYLER – the opposite of fast fashion
At RESTYLER, we create outfits from second-hand clothes. Each set is a response to your needs and, at the same time, a choice for the planet. We show that fashion can have a second life – and a better meaning.
