What is fast fashion and how does it affect our planet?
Fast fashion is a phenomenon that has been gaining popularity for years thanks to its low prices and quick access to new trends. But behind this “fashion convenience” there is a huge cost – not only environmental, but also social. At RESTYLER, we believe that style doesn’t have to be harmful. That’s why today we’re bringing you closer to what fast fashion really is and why it’s worth choosing a different path.
What is fast fashion?
Fast fashion is a model of clothing production based on mass, cheap, and fast production of clothing that quickly hits stores and disappears just as quickly. Collections change every few weeks, and clothes are designed to attract attention but not necessarily to last for years.
Why is fast fashion a problem?
1. Extreme resource consumption
The production of a single T-shirt can take up to 2,700 liters of water. In addition, there is the use of energy, pesticides (e.g. in cotton cultivation) and chemical dyes, which often end up directly in rivers.
2. CO2 emissions and carbon footprint
The fashion industry is responsible for around 10% of global CO 2 emissions. Transporting clothes around the world and producing synthetics (e.g. polyester) is a huge climate burden.
3. Mountains of waste
Many clothes are only worn a few times before ending up in landfill. In Europe, we throw away an average of 11 kg of textiles per person per year. Fast fashion is disposable – and the planet is not disposable.
4. Unethical production
Low prices are often due to low wages, poor working conditions and exploitation of people, especially women and children in developing countries. Consumption has its price – it's just not always visible on the price tag.
What is the alternative?
Instead of buying new things every season, it's worth investing in second-hand clothes, recycling and quality. Styles can be creative, thoughtful and conscious - without harming the environment and other people.
RESTYLER – the opposite of fast fashion
At RESTYLER we create styles from second-hand clothes. Each set is a response to your needs and at the same time a choice for the planet. We show that fashion can have a second life – and a better meaning.
